Australia is a continent, a country and an island at the same time. It is the sixth largest country and the smallest continent in the world. It is situated in the southern hemisphere, in the south of Asia, between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. That’s why it has summer when we have winter and it has winter when we have summer. January is the hottest month in Australia. Australia is the world’s driest continent. Huge areas of land are so dry that nobody can live there. There are rainforests in the north, snowfields in the south-east and desert in the centre.

Australia has got six states and two internal territories. There are some well-known landmarks there. The Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world and Ayers Rock, a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory just in the centre of Australia, are among them. Ayers Rock is a magical place for the Aborigines. The Great Barrier Reef is a home for 1,500 species of fish and has a great attraction for tourists, especially scuba divers, who enjoy doing underwater photos.

The capital of Australia is Canberra. It is not the biggest city. Sydney and Melbourne are much larger. People from about 200 nations live there. The official language is English.

Australian wildlife is various. There are nearly half a million species of plants and animals there. Australia’s best-known animals are the kangaroo, the koala, the emu and the dingo (a wild dog). There are 50 species of kangaroo and 55 species of parrots. About 400 species of birds in Australia are found nowhere else in the world.
