Wild Life of the Amazon
The Amazon is the world’s second longest river. It’s 6259 km long. Only the Nile, in Africa, is longer. The Amazon may not be the longest, but it is the widest river in the world. No other river comes close. At its widest point it can be 11 kilometres wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season it can be about 40
On its long journey to the sea, the Amazon changes colours all the time. The Amazon rainforest, sometimes called the lungs of the planet, is unlike any other place on earth. It’s the largest and one of the oldest tropical areas on our planet. It may be 100 million years old.
The rainforest climate is hot and wet. It rains every day, so regularly that you can set your watch by it. The rain comes down suddenly and stops just as suddenly. In such unusual conditions trees grow tall, up to 40 m, in order to get sunlight. There are about 30,000 flowering plants in the Amazon rainforest. They come in all shapes and colours.
The Amazon is home for different living things. The piranha, one of the world’s terrifying fish, is only up to 40 cm long, but it can kill even cattle or humans. The boto is the largest river dolphin. It can grow up to 2.6 metres. Here you can find sharks, small crocodiles, the heaviest snakes, insects and butterflies, which are unnamed yet, more than 80 kinds of monkeys and more than 200 species of mosquitoes.
